Introducing Studio 242

A new space dedicated to creative exploration and literary citizenship opens on campus.

Studio 242 just opened on the Eagle Hill School campus. It is an academic and social space where students and teachers celebrate reading, writing, and crafting. The idea to have a studio on our campus emerged while I was writing my dissertation in 2014 and my subsequent book, Writing Studio Pedagogy: Space, Place, and Rhetoric in Collaborative Environments (2017).

Studio 242 is a run on several innovative strategies, including conversation, collaboration, divergent thinking, spatial awareness, and play. We are excited to bring a range of activities to the EHS community.

At Studio 242, we are dedicated to guiding students and teachers to be literate citizens in the twenty-first century.

A Range of Activities

Already this year, we have celebrated Fredrick Douglass and The North Star with a lecture on Journalism and a zine-making activity; a costume party where we wrote Halloween stories; a holiday party where we wrote greeting cards and decorated cookies; and a night of role-playing and short story writing to celebrate the birthday of author Neil Gaiman. Coming up at the Studio we will be celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday with a twenty-four-hour read-a-thon that will look more like a small Renaissance fair.

Professional Development

Studio 242 is also a space for faculty professional development. We have already offered faculty writing across the curriculum events on the writing process, writing genres, and writing in a time of artificial intelligence. Ahead this year will be other professional development events on the myth of the writing genius and on teaching writing to international students and English as a Second Language Students.
