At the beginning of April and at the start of National Poetry Month, the winner of the prestigious 2020Glascock Poetry Prize was announced.
We are very pleased to honor this year's recipient of the the Glascock Poetry Prize winner, Marissa Perez, an Eagle Hill School alumna and class of 2014! Marissa is currently a liberal arts major at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts and she is the 97th winner of the competition.
The Glascock Poetry Contest, which is believed to be the oldest, intercollegiate annual poetry contest in the U.S., honors the memory of poet Kathryn Irene Glascock, who graduated from Mount Holyoke in 1922.
Other esteemed poets who were awarded the Glascock Poetry prize include Sylvia Plath, James Agee, Kenneth Koch, James Merrill, Katha Pollit, Muriel Rukeyser, Mark Halperin, and Mary Jo Salter.
To enter the competition, students must be nominated by a faculty member at their college or university. A collection of their work was judged by a panel of three distinguished poets. This year's judges were noted poets, Kaveh Akbar, Franny Choi and Erica Hunt.
Marissa submitted eight poems for consideration and her poem Pacific Coast Highway was selected as the winning entry.

Skin, viscid on contact.
Up here, halls begin to dim.
Swimming in delft blues.
Pulse is sublingual.
Map warps from weeping palms.
And then, the (compact) wooden frame.
Giovanni and his wife, 1434 A.D.
Oil upon oak.
Sclerae, engorged with some species of tears.
The gaze, angled at the emerald-draped wife/
van Eyck’s glinting mirror.
Circulation snags, as prong to fiber.
