College Counseling

The College Counseling Workshop Series begins during fall family weekend with the presentations from college counselors and college admission counselors, a college fair, and other workshops. Along with the presentations, families also receive materials designed to educate them about what to expect going forward, and how best to prepare for the college search and application process. The series continues with virtual and in-person workshops throughout the winter and spring to help students and parents understand the college application process, academic support, standardized testing, and financial aid.

Every autumn, college admissions representatives come to campus to speak with EHS college counselors and interested students. Through these visits students learn more about a college and meet the representative who will typically read their applications if they choose to apply.

The College Counseling Office sponsors a monthly trip to a regional college to give students the opportunity to experience a variety of different schools—large and small, in the city and out in the suburbs, public and private, etc. The goal is to help students determine their priorities for their college search.

Students are given multiple opportunities to meet college representatives at college fairs. The first is hosted by EHS during our fall Family Weekend. Other opportunities include a visual and performing arts fair, a regional fair, and a national college fair that most of the members of the junior class attend.

Eagle Hill requires every student to take the College Orientation class in order to graduate. The course challenges students to develop their executive functioning skills and teaches them about the college application process. Students develop their self-awareness, research postsecondary options, start a college application, and develop an understanding of the expectations related to the transition to college.

Eagle Hill supports students in taking tests offered by ACT and the College Board. Since most EHS students take the ACT in their junior and senior years, underclassmen typically take the pre-ACT during their freshman and sophomore years to gain familiarity with the test and test-day procedures.

We are encouraged that test-optional policies have become more popular for colleges and that colleges are starting to understand that not all students are able to demonstrate their abilities through a multiple-choice exam.
