Holocaust Survivor Visits Eagle Hill
Janet Singer Applefield shares her inspiring story.
Eagle Hill School recently welcomed Janet Singer Applefield, a Holocaust survivor, activist, and author. Sharing insights from her life and her memoir, Becoming Janet, she offered a unique window into history while reflecting on the importance of resilience, identity, and standing against hate.
Born in Kraków, Poland, Janet recounted harrowing memories of her childhood during the Holocaust. She shared vivid accounts of being separated from her family, losing loved ones, and surviving in hiding thanks to the compassion of strangers. Through her heartfelt storytelling, Janet brought history to life, encouraging the audience to reflect deeply on the lessons of the Holocaust and their relevance in today’s world.
“Use your voice to stand up for what is right, even when it feels difficult.”
Students listened intently as Janet recounted her journey of unimaginable hardship and courage. Following her talk was a Q&A session in which students asked thought-provoking questions about her experiences, her writing process, and her views on current events. One student asked, “You mentioned that we should fight injustice, but how?” Janet responded, “Use your voice to stand up for what is right, even when it feels difficult.”
Reflecting on Janet’s visit, Kat Thompson, the chair of the diversity and social justice department, said, "Janet’s story reminds us that remembering the past is not just about history lessons—it’s a guide for how we live today, and that no act of kindness is too small.” Janet's story and the lessons it imparts will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the Eagle Hill community.
