Dr. Tristan Sharp brings a fresh perspective to the classroom.

Eagle Hill's newest English and history teacher, Dr. Tristan Sharp, brings a wealth of academic expertise and a passion for education shaped by his years of research. With a PhD in Medieval History from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Rochester, Dr. Sharp’s journey into teaching began during his postdoctoral fellowship, where he discovered his true calling: connecting with students through history.

Dr. Sharp's research exemplifies the kind of critical thinking he hopes to inspire in his students. His article published by Austrian History Yearbook (2024), "Putting the Violence Back in the Late Medieval German Feud," challenges conventional historical narratives. While many scholars have softened their portrayal of medieval German feuds, Dr. Sharp's work demonstrates the importance of questioning accepted interpretations and examining historical events in their full context. This approach—challenging assumptions and taking a deeper dive into evidence—is one he brings to his classroom, encouraging students to think critically about both historical and contemporary issues.

Dr. Sharp’s teaching motto, “Meet the student where they are,” exemplifies his student-centered approach.

"In research and in teaching, it's crucial to look beyond surface-level explanations," Dr. Sharp explains. "I want my students to develop the confidence to question what they read and form their own well-reasoned conclusions, just as I learned to do in my academic work."

What excites Dr. Sharp most about teaching at Eagle Hill is the opportunity to build strong connections with students through small class sizes and one-on-one interactions. “The small class atmosphere allows me to provide individualized support,” he shares. He also appreciates the flexibility that Eagle Hill offers in crafting his curriculum, a stark contrast to the rigid syllabi of college settings. This freedom enables him to tailor lessons to align with students' interests, fostering a more engaging and exploratory learning environment.

Dr. Sharp’s teaching motto, “Meet the student where they are,” exemplifies his student-centered approach. Whether guiding discussions on medieval history or exploring contemporary themes in literature, he is dedicated to understanding his students' unique perspectives and helping them grow intellectually.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Sharp’s enthusiasm for history and education continues to inspire his teaching practices, making him an asset to the Eagle Hill community.
