Embracing Deep Work at Eagle Hill

Fostering Focus in a Distracted World

At Eagle Hill, we're committed to providing our students with an education that goes beyond the surface, equipping them with skills that will serve them well beyond their time at our school. In pursuit of this goal, our faculty has been delving into Cal Newport's influential book Deep Work. This exploration has sparked meaningful discussions about how we can enhance our students' learning experiences and better prepare them for the challenges of the contemporary world.

Newport's concept of "deep work" resonates strongly with our educational philosophy at Eagle Hill. Deep work, as Newport defines it, involves cognitively demanding tasks that require sustained, uninterrupted attention. This aligns perfectly with our aim to foster critical thinking, creativity, and in-depth understanding among our students.

At Eagle Hill, we recognize that the ability to engage in deep work is not just an academic skill, but a life skill. In a world increasingly filled with distractions, the capacity for focused, meaningful work sets our students apart and prepares them for success in college and beyond.

Newport’s mention of architect David Dewane’s Eudaimonia Machine—a sequence of workspaces designed to promote increasingly deeper focus—has inspired us to look at our campus spaces in a new light. Our new senior dormitories will incorporate this concept. Common areas foster collaboration and social interaction, while smaller, more intimate spaces provide opportunities for group study and discussions. Private rooms offer the quiet, distraction-free environment necessary for deep work.

While we emphasize the importance of deep work, we also recognize the reality of school life, which often involves numerous responsibilities and frequent task-switching. Our goal is to help students strike a balance between deep and shallow work, teaching them to identify tasks that require deep focus, to allocate specific times for uninterrupted work, to manage distractions effectively, and to embrace periods of boredom as opportunities for creativity and reflection.

By introducing the concepts from Deep Work into our curriculum and daily life at Eagle Hill, we're not just helping our students succeed academically. We're also equipping them with valuable skills for lifelong learning and personal growth. Our journey with Deep Work is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing how these principles will continue to shape and enhance the Eagle Hill experience for years to come.
