Bringing Glass Flameworking to Eagle Hill School!

STAR Collaboration wraps up an exciting residency with Molly Jackson.

This past fall, Eagle Hill School welcomed local artist Molly Jackson as STAR Artist. A glass artist whose glass jewelry and sculpture have been featured worldwide, Jackson has taught her craft locally for over ten years and joined the Eagle Hill community to help with a specific project: Get a glass flameworking station up and running in the Makerspace.

For the past three months, Molly Jackson and EHS Makerspace Coordinator Jonnie Coutu have collaborated extensively to see this project through to completion. Coutu said, “We were lucky enough to have some existing equipment and supplies, so we wanted to utilize what we had while updating the space with proper workbenches, safety equipment, and ventilation.” With some delays due to shipping times and unpredictable New England weather, the glass flameworking station is now completed.

Following the completion of the station, Jackson and Coutu led a faculty demonstration in early February. Six faculty members were able to observe the process of glasswork, and a second upcoming class will give teachers the chance to learn the basics themselves. Jackson and Coutu also plan to lead one more demonstration for faculty and interested students. Ideally, this will ignite interest through the student body as Coutu incorporates glass flameworking into the Maker Challenge and Maker Science programs next year.

The completion of the glass flameworking station promises to expand the already numerous creative tools available to students through the Makerspace. Stay tuned to see what new doors to discovery and creation open next!
